How to prepare for a forest visit
Before visiting areas managed by Sustainable Timber Tasmania, we recommend contacting one of our regional offices.
Our staff can help you understand:
- What activities are occurring in the area
- Whether heavy vehicles are using the same roads
- Current road conditions
- If there are locked gates restricting access
Things to remember while visiting forests
- Respect cultural, heritage, and environmental values.
- Observe flora and fauna – look, but don’t touch or remove.
- Only use existing tracks.
- Carry out all rubbish – leave no trace.
- Minimise your impact when camping.
- Do not enter private land without permission. Avoid disturbing livestock or water sources.
- Bring enough water, food, fuel, basic spares, and a first aid kit. In remote areas, travel with another vehicle and maintain radio contact.
- Plan your trip and let someone know your route and return time.
- Leave gates as you found them—open or closed.
Vehicle use and licensing in our forests
- All vehicles must be fully registered, insured and drivers must hold a current, valid driver’s licence.
- In some areas, trail bikes and ATVs with restricted registration are permitted – but drivers must still be licensed.
- Ensure your vehicle is clean and well-maintained to reduce environmental impact.
- Follow all public land laws and rules, especially for vehicles and recreational vehicles including 4WDs, motorbikes and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs).
- Only drive on existing vehicle tracks
- Minimise your impact when driving.
Camping on Permanant Timber Production Zone Land
You are welcome to camp on the land we manage, except in areas where it is specifically prohibited. These areas will be clearly signposted.
To avoid any inconvenience, we recommend contacting us to confirm where camping is allowed before your trip.
If you plan to have a campfire, be sure to check current fire weather warnings and restrictions. Always act responsibly to prevent bushfires.
Campfires are prohibited on days where there is a total fire ban.
