What we manage

Sustainable Timber Tasmania is responsible for the management of 821,000 hectares of land. That’s just over 12% of Tasmania’s total land area (6.8m hectares). The majority of areas we manage are on Permanent Timber Production Zone (PTPZ) land, totalling 812,000 hectares. This includes land available for wood production, as well as land managed for reservation.

What we harvest and regenerate

When we harvest or partially harvest an area, that area is regenerated or re-established so the forest can regrow. This is part of sustainable forest management.

Of all of the land that is available for wood production on PTPZ land, only a small amount is harvested each year (less than 1%).

PTPZ land available for wood production 683,000 hectares
Total area harvested in 2023-24 5,855 hectares
Native forest on PTPZ land partially harvested this year 4,098 hectares
Native forest on PTPZ land clearfell harvested this year 803 hectares

What we produce

In 2023-2024, Sustainable Timber Tasmania harvested 1.26 million (1,263,654) tonnes of forest products for processing in Tasmania.

Forest operations prioritise harvesting sawlogs and optimising full recovery of each tree to maximise different products.
